With the advent of technology, everyone has access to information.  Telling people what to do is an unsophisticated leadership style.  As a leader, or an aspiring leader, it is important to consider the impact of your words and actions upon people.  Leaders create the culture and ethos within a working environment.  Many educational academics believe that working in an atmosphere of support and trust leads to improved teaching and learning.  They also believe that intelligence can grow so consider the people with whom you work as having ‘successful intelligence’.  Provide people with the opportunity to grow.


  • offer the opportunity for teachers to work in a supportive, self-critical community
  • offer training which takes into account a teacher’s life-stage
  • demonstrate to teachers that they are valued
  • focus on developing learning rather than measuring results


  • develop a culture of partnership
  • introduce peer coaching between teachers
  • create collaborative working groups within and between learning environments
  • offer teachers work time to discuss teaching and learning
  • establish a climate  of trust for self-review and learning


High performance indicators create stress which becomes unsustainable and leads to a high level of absenteeism.  Make sure that teachers are:

  • well informed about decisions
  • involved in projects using clear guidance
  • offered the opportunity to share knowledge


As a leader you need to:

  • manage your emotions
  • allow teachers to take risks by offering a supportive working environment
  • take time to be empathetic
  • consider a work/life balance for teachers
  • be trustworthy
  • offer support
